Themed tour:
German Impressionism? A promenade through a time full of hope.
What distinguishes German Impressionism from French Impressionism?
This question immediately arises when viewing the wonderful, impressive exhibition at the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, subtitled “Max Liebermann and his time” (until February 8, 2026).
The answer is complex. For me, the most remarkable aspect is that this phase can be understood as an era of pausing and hope in Germany before the upheavals of World War II. After that, nothing was the same anymore.

"I WANTED TO BE POPE." This was the answer of the now 80-year-old Anselm Kiefer, one of the most important post-war artists, when asked about his childhood career aspirations, in which – with reference to his original role model – responsibility for one's own actions is always central.
